Steel processing knowledge
Why combine carbon steel with stainless steel?
Carbon steel offers strength, workability and cost advantages. Stainless steel provides corrosion resistance, surface cleanliness and durability. Combining the two materials helps reduce cost while keeping the required strength and corrosion resistance.
Form 1: Dissimilar metal welding
Dissimilar metal welding joins carbon steel and stainless steel components together. It is useful when only certain sections require stainless steel performance, such as nozzles, contact surfaces or corrosion-resistant areas.
Form 2: Clad steel plate and clad pipe
Clad steel combines a carbon steel base material with a stainless steel layer through physical or metallurgical bonding. The carbon steel side provides strength and thickness, while the stainless steel layer provides corrosion resistance.
Why clad materials are useful
Typical applications
These technologies are common in shipbuilding, pressure vessels, chemical equipment, piping systems, food equipment and kitchenware manufacturing, where strength, corrosion resistance and cost must be balanced.
